Are you one of the portfolio people?

"It is tempting to call for better leadership, but we probably expect too much from the leaders of the nations. Those nations are too big, the connections not strong enough, the commitment to the future not long enough. It is better to look smaller, to our now-smaller organisations, to local communities and cities, to families and clusters of friends, to small networks of portfolio people with time to give to something bigger than themselves. We have to fashion our own directions in our own places."

Charles Handy; 1932 -

Charles Handy is widely recognised as an authority on organisational effectiveness and management. Although this quote dates back to 1994, when it appeared in his book ‘The Empty Raincoat’, it’s possibly even more relevant today as his term ‘portfolio people’ defined individuals who determine their own work patterns and interests.

With the additional pressures that have come about as a result of increased competition, savvier customers and the requirement for organisations to constantly evolve or risk going under, it’s a reminder that people at all levels can lead change rather than waiting for recognised leadership teams to initiate it.

Standing out from the crowd is also important in a world where employers and executive search consultants have instant access to potential candidates via online networks. This supports the idea that taking responsibility for developing your professional capability and personal profile can help you stay one step ahead of the competition.

Our search and coaching offers are aimed at leaders who already embrace this philosophy. From a client perspective, we focus on recruiting individuals who are self-starters; with the confidence to lead others and initiate positive change. For high performing candidates, we offer coaching as part of the selection process and dedicated leadership & career coaching programmes to ensure career success within the UK’s leading organisations.
